NATURE – PARKS AND RIVERS

The Tagus International National Park, a natural reserve of paramount importance to the portuguese territory, covers a huge portion of the Portugal-Spain border, encompassing the regions of Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova and Vila Velha de Ródão.

It is a distinguished area, whose efforts regarding nature conservation are recognized throughout the country. Here, thousands of different species of animals inhabit, many of them considered to be endangered and protected by International law.

Dressed up with cork oaks, holm oaks and willows, the region’s vegetation establishes a perfect harmony with the river that crosses it. The scent and colors of different plants like the rosemary, the white broom or the mastic-trees define the atmosphere, granting the park its unique charm. It is an important area for birds to nest, being home to several species such as the bonelli’s eagle, the royal eagle, the griffon vulture or the egyptian vulture.

Here, you can also observe black storks, a truly rare sight! Last but not least, the park also shelters a wide variety of mammals, such as the european otter, the widcat or the red deer.

Emerging close to the gorgeous municipality of Vila Velha de Rodão, stand the Portas de Rodão, a natural monument of extreme beauty. It is a massive geological formation with a unique viewpoint, from which you can enjoy an amazing landscape.

Finally, we propose a hike along the shores of the Tagus river, a wonderful opportunity to come across some of the most diverse animal species. By its riverbed, it is possible to find several preserved prehistoric traces of early human life in the region, as well as the notorious Rock Art Site in the Tagus Valley.
